Nearly 3,000 EVMs in Goa remain blocked amid court case, raising concerns ahead of 2027 polls

Panaji, Apr 8: In a significant election-related development, nearly 3,000 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) used during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Goa remain blocked due to an ongoing case before the Bombay High Court.

The issue stems from a petition filed by a defeated candidate from South Goa, alleging violations of guidelines set by the Election Commission of India during the commissioning process of the EVMs. Following the petition, the machines have not been cleared for reuse pending the court’s decision.

With preparations gradually beginning for the 2027 Assembly elections, officials are facing mounting concerns over a potential shortage of voting equipment. The continued unavailability of a large number of EVMs could pose logistical challenges and impact the smooth conduct of the polls.

Authorities are closely tracking the legal proceedings, hoping for an early resolution to ensure adequate arrangements are made well in advance of the crucial state elections.
