Rashid Khan uncertain for India test, prioritises long-term fitness

New Delhi, Apr 9: Afghanistan star leg-spinner Rashid Khan has raised doubts about his participation in the upcoming one-off Test against India, citing concerns over the physical demands of red-ball cricket and its impact on his long-term career.

Currently representing the Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, Rashid is expected to face India in a one-off Test scheduled in New Chandigarh from June 6 to 10. However, the spinner indicated that he may opt out to avoid risking further strain on his back.

Rashid, who has taken 45 wickets in Test cricket, has featured in only six of Afghanistan’s 12 Tests since their debut against India in 2018. His appearances in the longer format have been limited, particularly after undergoing back surgery following the 2023 ODI World Cup. His last Test outing came against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo in January 2025.

Speaking after Gujarat Titans’ narrow win over the Delhi Capitals, Rashid revealed that medical advice has consistently urged him to stay away from red-ball cricket due to the heavy workload it demands. He recalled bowling 67 overs in a single Test against Zimbabwe post-surgery, a decision his doctor strongly warned against.

The leg-spinner admitted that sustaining such workloads could shorten his career, especially given the intensity of Test cricket, where bowlers often deliver long spells across multiple days.

Despite his reservations about Tests, Rashid reaffirmed his commitment to limited-overs formats, particularly ODIs, which he believes are more manageable physically and allow him to extend his playing career.

He added that while he may consider playing occasional Tests—possibly one per year—regular participation in the format appears unlikely. Managing workload and maintaining fitness, he stressed, will be key as he looks ahead to future international tournaments, including the World Cup.
