California, Apr 10: A sheriff’s deputy was shot dead during an eviction operation in central California, triggering a prolonged standoff that ended with the suspect being killed by law enforcement.

The incident occurred in Porterville when deputies from the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department arrived to serve an eviction notice to a 60-year-old man. Authorities said the man opened fire as officers approached, fatally wounding a deputy.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside the residence for several hours, continuing to fire at officers. Law enforcement deployed gas into the home during the standoff, while residents in the area were evacuated or asked to shelter in place.

According to Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, the standoff ended in the evening when the gunman exited the house and moved through nearby yards while armed. A SWAT team from Kern County SWAT confronted him, and after he allegedly fired again, an armoured vehicle was driven over him, killing him.

Officials said the man had defaulted on rent for over a month and was expecting the eviction notice, allegedly lying in wait for officers.

The slain deputy was identified as Randy Hoppert, a former U.S. Navy veteran who had joined the department in 2020.

Authorities said the suspect’s family had been in contact with him during the standoff and urged him to surrender, but he refused.

The incident led to temporary lockdowns in nearby schools and caused panic in the otherwise quiet neighbourhood, with residents describing the situation as shocking.
