Mumbai, Apr 10: Amid growing energy concerns, the Maharashtra Government has moved to accelerate the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections across urban areas, issuing a government resolution (GR) to fast-track implementation.

The Urban Development Department has introduced fresh guidelines to strengthen the city gas distribution (CGD) network and ensure quicker rollout of PNG infrastructure and household connections. The move aligns with directives of the Central government to enhance access to cleaner fuel and reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

As part of the initiative, CGD companies have begun rapid pipeline-laying work to ensure time-bound expansion. Each company will appoint a district-level nodal officer responsible for submitting weekly progress reports on pipeline expansion and new connections. These updates will be consolidated by a state-level coordinator from the oil industry and reviewed by the government for close monitoring.

The GR also simplifies the application process for consumers. Residents from registered, unregistered and proposed housing societies can apply for PNG connections, while individuals in completed buildings can submit applications either collectively or independently. CGD firms have been directed to facilitate both online and offline application modes and ensure wide public awareness.

To improve service delivery, companies have been asked to maintain 24-hour helplines and expand support systems such as helpdesks and ward-level centres based on demand. Municipal corporations, district supply officers and CGD firms will also set up dedicated information centres.

Regular district-level reviews will be conducted to assess progress and ensure timely execution of the rollout plan.
