Kasparov calls Praggnanandhaa a “bleak shadow” amid struggles at Candidates

Daijiworld Media Network - Cyprus

Cyprus, Apr 11: Chess legend Garry Kasparov has said that Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa has recently appeared as a “bleak shadow” of his earlier form, following a series of underwhelming results at the Candidates tournament in Cyprus.

After 10 rounds, Praggnanandhaa is placed seventh in the standings, with just half the points of tournament leader Javokhir Sindarov, his younger rival from Uzbekistan. His defeat to Sindarov further dented his campaign, effectively ending his chances of contesting for the top spot.

Speaking during commentary with the St Louis Chess Club, Kasparov expressed surprise at the Indian’s dip in form. “Pragg was on the rise and just now it’s like he’s a bleak shadow of what we saw a couple of years ago,” he said.

Grandmaster Yasser Seirawan also observed that Praggnanandhaa’s play appeared “stale” and lacking fresh ideas. Kasparov agreed, remarking that while the Indian’s quality remained high, something vital seemed missing in his current approach.

“Stale is a very good word. Something is missing… the spice of the game. It’s still top, top quality, but definitely not enough at that level,” Kasparov added.

Sindarov’s strong performance has placed him on the verge of securing a potential World Championship opportunity, with speculation building about a possible title clash against reigning world champion D Gukesh.

Commenting on hypothetical match-ups, Kasparov said he would prefer a showdown involving Magnus Carlsen, while also noting that Gukesh’s stability could make a potential title match highly competitive if Sindarov qualifies.

The Candidates tournament continues to draw global attention as young talents reshape the future of world chess.
