Panaji, Apr 17: A police constable was arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle ganja into the Colvale Central Jail in North Goa, officials said on Friday.

Acting on specific inputs, authorities caught accused Sumesh Mandrekar with nearly 1.65 kg of ganja when he tried to supply the contraband inside the high-security prison on Thursday. The seized drugs were reportedly divided into four packets.

Officials said Mandrekar, a 2024 batch constable, was taken into custody and later produced before Superintendent of Police (Prison) Suchita Dessai. He is currently being interrogated.

Police have launched a probe to determine whether more individuals are involved in the racket and to trace the wider network behind the attempted drug supply inside the jail premises.
