Kolkata, Apr 26: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday launched a sharp attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over women’s safety, alleging a rise in crimes against women during her tenure.
Addressing an election rally in Jamalpur in Purba Bardhaman district, Shah claimed that women have suffered the most under the Trinamool Congress government over the past 15 years.
“In the last fifteen years under Mamata’s rule, if anyone has suffered the most, it is our mothers and sisters. Incidents like RG Kar, Sandeshkhali, Calcutta Law College and Durgapur College show that atrocities against women have happened everywhere,” he said.

Criticising remarks attributed to the Chief Minister, Shah said restrictions on women’s movement reflected governance failure.
“I want to assure you that after the 5th, even a young girl will be able to step out at 1 AM, and no goon will dare to even look at her,” he said.
Shah asserted that no BJP-ruled state imposes such restrictions and accused Banerjee of failing to ensure safety.
“You are a woman Chief Minister, yet you have failed to ensure the safety of women. If any miscreant dares to harm women, they will be put behind bars,” he added.
Expressing confidence about the party’s electoral prospects, Shah said the BJP is likely to secure more than 110 seats in the first phase of polling.
“Based on feedback, people have made their choice. A high voter turnout indicates that change is coming and the BJP is set to form the government,” he said.
He added that internal assessments suggest the party is on track to gain a strong position after the initial phases of polling.
Shah also promised swift implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in West Bengal if the BJP comes to power.
He specifically referred to the Matua community, stating that they would be granted citizenship rights without delay.
“Once a BJP government is formed, every member of the Matua community will receive citizenship, and they will no longer have to live in uncertainty,” he said.
The remarks come amid an intensifying political contest in West Bengal, with both ruling and opposition parties stepping up their campaigns ahead of the elections.
