Delay in fire response sparks outrage after Udupi blaze guts commercial complex

Udupi, Apr 27: A major fire accident near the City Bus Stand has triggered serious concern among the public and business community. The incident, which engulfed a commercial complex, caused extensive damage, particularly to mobile retail shops, leaving traders devastated as their primary source of livelihood was destroyed.

Despite the fire station being located just 1 to 2 km away in Kinnimulki with adequate infrastructure and vehicles, firefighters reportedly took around 40 to 45 minutes to reach the spot. Locals and traders have alleged that this delay significantly contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and the scale of destruction, sparking outrage and raising questions about the efficiency of emergency response systems.

Udupi Mobile Retail Association district president Vivek G Suvarna expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that such negligence must not be repeated. He urged the district administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the delay and take strict action against those responsible. He also demanded immediate compensation for the affected traders to help them rebuild their businesses and restore their livelihoods.

Meanwhile, the Solidarity Youth Movement, Udupi district unit, also issued a statement condemning the incident. The organisation highlighted that several shops were completely gutted in the blaze, resulting in losses amounting to crores of rupees and leaving traders in distress.

The public raised questions about why fire services took so long to respond despite the short distance and emphasized the need for a transparent, high-level inquiry. It further called for strict enforcement of fire safety norms in commercial buildings, pointing out that in some areas, the lack of proper access roads has previously hampered firefighting efforts.

It is important to ensure mandatory fire safety equipment in all commercial complexes and provide proper training for its use. Additionally, the authorities must strengthen the fire department by equipping it with advanced technology and improving response mechanisms.

The district administration must take immediate and long-term measures to prevent such incidents in the future and to ensure the safety of the public and business establishments.

We are all irresponsible citizens. Fire fighters took their own time to get ready and reach the spot. the private vehicle drivers did not give way to the the fire trucks. The building owner did not keep enough primary fire response and safety equipments. The shop owners did insure their shops..now crying for compensation!!

Root cause is lack of fire codes implementation. Fire pump and fire water tank must be installed at all commercial complexes. How they got licence to operate!!!! Chalta Hai in our blessed country.

I was in Udupi around the time this happened and saw the fire service rush there. Despite sirens being on, several cars near KM Marg were blocking them by being slow or just wanting to cross to the other side without giving way to emergency service vehicles. I know 40-45 minutes is too much but also ensure citizens not giving way or blocking fire service vehicles and ambulances are warned or fined. They need to understand the gravity of the situation. Creating 3-4 lanes of vehicles in 2 lane road has to stop. Free left is not supposed to be blocked. Lets all ensure traffic rules and etiquettes are followed.
