Shammi Silva resigns as Sri Lanka Cricket president amid crisis in board

Colombo, Apr 29: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) President Shammi Silva has resigned with immediate effect along with the board’s executive committee, marking a major shake-up in the island nation’s cricket administration.

The resignations have been formally communicated to Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage, according to an SLC statement issued on Wednesday.

“The President of Sri Lanka Cricket, Mr Shammi Silva, has tendered his resignation from the post, effective today. Along with him, the office bearers and members of the Executive Committee of the SLC have also submitted their resignations,” the statement said.

Silva, 65, had headed Sri Lanka Cricket since 2019 and was re-elected unopposed in 2021, 2023 and 2025. His exit comes amid growing criticism over the decline of the national men’s team and allegations of administrative mismanagement.

Sri Lanka’s failure to progress to the Super Eights stage of this year’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted with India, is being seen as a major factor behind the leadership change.

Silva had also served as President of the Asian Cricket Council in 2025, succeeding Jay Shah.

Reports said the International Cricket Council has been briefed on the developments, though there is no clarity yet on fresh elections for the board.

Silva had earlier been removed as SLC chief in 2023 following Sri Lanka’s poor ODI World Cup campaign, a crisis that led to an ICC suspension and the relocation of the 2024 Under-19 World Cup from Sri Lanka to South Africa.

His latest resignation appears to bring an end to a turbulent and controversial tenure at the helm of Sri Lankan cricket.
