Auto LPG price hiked by Rs 5.73 per litre; drivers feel the pinch

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, May 1: Following the recent hike in commercial cylinder prices, the cost of Auto LPG has also seen a significant increase, dealing a fresh blow to auto-rickshaw drivers already burdened by the rising costs of petrol and diesel.

The price of Auto LPG has increased by Rs 5.73 per litre effective today. Until yesterday, the fuel was priced at Rs 89.35 per litre, but the sudden revision has pushed the rate to Rs 95.08 per litre.

Impact on livelihoods

This price hike comes as a major setback for drivers already managing daily operational costs, vehicle maintenance, EMIs, and insurance. While state-owned fuel bunks have officially implemented the unified hike of Rs 5.73, the situation at private bunks remains inconsistent. Drivers have reported varying prices across different private outlets, causing confusion and forcing many to travel longer distances in search of lower rates.

Potential fare revision

The sharp increase in fuel expenses has left many drivers contemplating a hike in minimum fares. However, they remain caught in a dilemma, fearing that increased fares might deter passengers who are already feeling the pinch of overall inflation.

For daily-wage earners, an additional expense of several rupees per litre translates into a substantial loss by the end of the day, impacting essential household expenditures such as rent and children's education.

As the ripple effect of this fuel hike is likely to hit common passengers indirectly, the auto-driver community is looking toward the government and concerned departments to intervene and provide necessary relief.

That is unfortunate that auto drivers who earn a living with so much work will need to shell out more. Best option is to increase the fare for the ride, so that justice is done. When the drivers feel the pinch, we the people will need to understand their plea. Since the war has begun, everything seems expensive, living a normal life has become increasingly difficult.
