Bhubaneswar, May 2: India’s Kuldeep Kumar created history by setting a new national record in men’s pole vault, clearing 5.41 metres at the 1st Indian Indoor Open Combined Events and Pole Vault competition here.

The 21-year-old athlete from Madhya Pradesh surpassed the previous record of 5.40m held by Dev Meena, who finished third with a jump of 5.20m. Reegan G secured second place with an effort of 5.25m.

Kuldeep’s achievement marks a significant breakthrough in Indian athletics, especially in a technically demanding event like pole vault, which has long struggled for visibility and infrastructure support in the country.

His journey to the record, however, has not been without challenges. Earlier this year, Kuldeep and Dev Meena faced an ordeal while returning from the All India Inter-University Championships, when they were reportedly asked to disembark from a train at Panvel station by railway authorities for carrying their poles. The athletes were stranded for hours, highlighting the lack of awareness and support for niche sports.

Despite such setbacks, Kuldeep delivered a standout performance in Bhubaneswar, clearing a height no Indian has achieved before and announcing himself as a rising force in the discipline.

At just 21, Kuldeep now holds the national record and is seen as a promising talent for the future of Indian pole vault, with his latest feat underscoring both his potential and resilience.
