Champions League: Saka strike sends Arsenal into final after 20-year wait

London, May 6: Bukayo Saka’s decisive strike helped Arsenal secure a historic place in the UEFA Champions League final, as they edged past Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the second leg to progress 2-1 on aggregate at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

In a tightly contested semi-final, where both sides struggled to create clear chances, the breakthrough came just before half-time. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak spilled a shot from Leandro Trossard, allowing Saka to capitalise with a simple finish from close range, sending the home crowd into celebration.

The tie had been evenly poised following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, and the return fixture lived up to expectations with a tense and tactical battle.

Atletico Madrid pushed for an equaliser in the second half, with their best opportunity arising from a defensive error by William Saliba. However, Giuliano Simeone failed to convert after rounding goalkeeper David Raya, much to the relief of the Arsenal defence.

Arsenal goalkeeper Raya made key interventions when required, while Declan Rice and Gabriel Magalhaes stood firm at the back to deny Atletico any late comeback.

Despite missed chances, including a clear opportunity for Viktor Gyokeres, Arsenal managed to hold their lead comfortably in the closing stages.

Manager Mikel Arteta’s tactical decisions, including backing young midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly and starting Saka despite fitness concerns, proved crucial on the night.

The victory marks Arsenal’s first Champions League final appearance in 20 years, putting them one step away from clinching their maiden European crown.
