UAE schools navigate extended Eid break as travel plans surge

Dubai, May 6: Schools across the United Arab Emirates are preparing for an unusually long holiday stretch as the upcoming Eid al-Adha break is set to coincide with the mid-term school holidays, creating a significant pause in the academic calendar later this month.

Based on the official 2026 public holiday schedule, Arafah Day is around May 26, followed by Eid holidays from May 27 to May 29, subject to moon-sighting confirmation. With weekends falling close to these dates, many residents could benefit from an extended break of up to six days. At the same time, the UAE Ministry of Education has already scheduled a mid-term school holiday from May 25 to May 29. When combined with adjacent weekends, students in several schools may effectively enjoy up to nine consecutive days away from classrooms.

This overlap has prompted schools, particularly in the private sector, to reorganise their academic plans. With final assessments approaching, institutions are accelerating revision sessions, distributing study materials earlier, and strengthening communication with parents regarding deadlines and expectations after the break. Educators are trying to maintain academic continuity while acknowledging the importance of family time during the festive period.

Many schools are also relying on digital platforms to keep students connected with their coursework, though there is a conscious effort to avoid overburdening them with assignments. Teachers emphasise that the focus remains on balanced learning, ensuring students stay engaged without compromising the restorative value of the holiday.

The extended break is also expected to trigger a surge in travel activity across the UAE, as families plan vacations, staycations, and visits to relatives. Such long holiday windows typically lead to increased demand for flights and hotel bookings, especially when they align with school schedules.

Parents have largely welcomed the timing, as it comes just ahead of the final examination period in many schools. Education officials believe the pause could help students recharge before the crucial assessment phase begins in June and July. Teachers, too, see it as a necessary breather after months of sustained academic pressure.

Looking ahead, the extended Eid break reflects a broader pattern in the UAE’s 2026 holiday calendar, where several public holidays align to create longer breaks for residents. However, schools continue to balance this flexibility with the need to stay on track academically, following guidelines issued by authorities such as the Ministry of Education before finalising schedules.

While the exact Eid dates remain dependent on lunar sightings, families across the Emirates are already gearing up for what is likely to be one of the busiest holiday periods of the year.
