Speeding tempo triggers multi-vehicle crash on Mumbai–Nashik highway flyover in Thane

Thane, May 10: A 22-year-old tempo driver was seriously injured after allegedly losing control of his vehicle while descending the Nitin Company flyover on the Mumbai–Nashik Highway, resulting in a chain collision involving six vehicles earlier this week.

The accident occurred around 1 pm on the busy stretch that connects Ghodbunder Road and the Samruddhi Highway to Mumbai, causing heavy traffic congestion and disrupting vehicle movement for a considerable period.

According to police officials, the injured driver, identified as Sheikh Shabir Mahmood, was driving the tempo down the flyover when the incident took place.

Preliminary investigations suggest that traffic flow on the flyover itself was relatively light, which may have led to the vehicle travelling at high speed. However, traffic near the end of the flyover had slowed significantly, with vehicles moving bumper-to-bumper.

Police said the driver was allegedly unable to control the tempo in time and crashed into another goods vehicle ahead of him. The impact triggered a chain reaction, causing multiple vehicles lined up in front to collide one after another.

“The tempo appears to have rammed into another vehicle from behind, which subsequently hit several other vehicles ahead of it,” a police official said.

The driver suffered severe injuries to his limbs in the crash and was rushed to a government hospital in Thane for treatment.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the exact cause of the accident while traffic police worked to clear the affected stretch and restore normal movement on the highway.
