Bantwal: Postal staff trek 1 km with Aadhaar equipment to 87-year-old woman’s home

Bantwal, Aug 23: When age and a difficult road left an 87-year-old woman unable to travel for an essential Aadhaar update, postal department staff took the service to her doorstep — carrying a computer and other equipment nearly 1 km through hilly terrain to reach her home.

Juliana, a resident of Ammadi village in Bantwal taluk, was facing difficulties in accessing government benefits as her Aadhaar had not been updated. Her advanced age had made walking difficult, while poor road connectivity meant travelling by vehicle to an Aadhaar service centre was also not an option.

With no easy way to resolve the issue, Juliana’s Aadhaar update had become a major concern.

Aadhaar service comes home

Savitha, a postal delivery worker attached to the Modankapu branch post office, learnt about the elderly woman’s predicament and informed the Aadhaar service staff of the postal department.

Responding to the situation, Nuthan Bangera, system administrator of the Puttur Division, decided to take the Aadhaar equipment directly to Juliana’s home, with the assistance of her family members.

The team carried the computer and other equipment for around 1 km through hilly terrain before reaching the house.

The staff then successfully completed the Aadhaar update on the spot, including biometric and mobile number updates, bringing relief to the elderly woman.

The effort by the postal department’s Aadhaar service staff has earned appreciation from members of the public as well as senior departmental officials.

Services based on need

The postal department’s Aadhaar service wing provides doorstep services to people who are unable to travel, including those with mobility difficulties. Its teams also visit homes and special-needs institutions to provide Aadhaar-related services.

Nuthan Bangera said the Aadhaar service team under the Puttur Division had so far visited more than 100 locations to provide services at people’s homes.

The initiative aims to ensure that age, mobility challenges or poor road connectivity do not prevent people from accessing essential Aadhaar services.
