Copenhagen, May 12: Christian Norgaard has announced his retirement from international football following Denmark’s failure to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The 32-year-old Arsenal midfielder confirmed his decision through a social media post, bringing an end to a Denmark career that saw him earn 41 international caps.

Norgaard’s final appearance for the national team came in March during Denmark’s defeat to the Czech Republic national football team in Prague.

The midfielder admitted that Denmark’s inability to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup played a major role in his decision to step away from international football, as he had hoped to represent his country at one final major tournament.

Reflecting on his journey with the national side, Norgaard spoke emotionally about the experience of representing Denmark and playing in front of passionate home supporters.

He said some of his fondest memories came from matches at Parken Stadium, where he enjoyed wearing the national colours and sharing moments with teammates and staff.

Norgaard also thanked Denmark head coach Brian Riemer for the trust placed in him during the latter stages of his international career.

He described Denmark’s victory over Portugal national football team in 2025 as one of his personal highlights, particularly because of the leadership role he played in midfield during the match.

Explaining the timing of his retirement, the midfielder said family considerations and the emergence of younger talents within Danish football influenced the decision.

Norgaard added that it now felt like the right moment to make way for the next generation of players while spending more time with his family.

With his international chapter closed, Norgaard will now focus entirely on club football under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

Despite limited Premier League appearances this season, he has remained a valuable member of the squad during Arsenal’s European campaign as the club prepares for the upcoming UEFA Champions League Final against Paris Saint-Germain on May 30 in Budapest.
