Akron, May 15: Two people were killed after a small aircraft crashed into a residential house in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, according to local authorities and federal aviation officials.

Police said the victims were the only occupants of the aircraft, while no injuries were reported among residents inside the home. Emergency calls regarding the crash began arriving shortly before 4 pm local time.

The aircraft involved was identified as a Piper PA-28 carrying two persons, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into the incident.

The crash triggered a fire at the residence, with the Akron Fire Department stating that flames engulfed part of the property following the impact. Videos circulating online showed the home’s garage consumed by fire as emergency sirens sounded nearby.

Authorities said a portion of the aircraft’s tail section was visible in the driveway of the damaged home.

District Fire Chief Sierjie Lash said multiple local and state agencies, including the state fire marshal, were at the scene as rescue and investigation operations continued.

“We are letting residents get to their homes, but the direct crash site remains secured,” Lash told reporters.

According to the State Highway Patrol, the aircraft had departed from Akron Fulton Regional Airport, located around three miles east of the crash location, shortly before the accident occurred.

The exact cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and investigations are underway.
