Shiv Sena (UBT) slams Centre over fuel hike, calls austerity moves ‘mere optics’

Daijiworld Media Network – Mumbai

Mumbai, May 15: Shiv Sena (UBT) on Friday intensified its attack on the BJP-led Central government over the rising fuel prices and economic situation, accusing the administration of relying on “symbolic austerity” instead of addressing the country’s growing financial and energy challenges.

In a strongly worded editorial published in party mouthpiece Saamana, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction criticised recent appeals urging citizens to reduce fuel consumption, avoid unnecessary travel and adopt work-from-home practices amid the ongoing fuel crisis.

The editorial described the government as a “stay-at-home administration” and questioned its economic management during a period marked by inflation and global energy uncertainty.

The party alleged that major public sector companies such as ONGC had weakened financially under the current government. It claimed the state-run energy giant, which once held substantial reserves, was now facing mounting debt, while domestic oil production had also reportedly declined over the years.

Shiv Sena (UBT) further argued that while public sector firms were under pressure, the BJP and PM CARES Fund allegedly possessed large financial reserves and suggested those funds should be diverted to the national treasury as a demonstration of public responsibility.

The editorial also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent fuel conservation appeal and questioned the reduced security convoy seen during one of his recent visits in Delhi.

Referring to visuals showing the Prime Minister travelling with only a small escort convoy, the party questioned why large convoys involving multiple vehicles were used earlier if minimal security arrangements were sufficient now.

According to the editorial, the move appeared aimed at projecting an image of austerity amid growing public anger over inflation and rising fuel costs.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too came under attack for his recent motorcycle ride to Vidhan Bhavan as part of a fuel-saving campaign.

The party termed the move “theatrical” and contrasted it with reports of senior state leaders allegedly using chartered flights to attend political programmes in other states.

The editorial also criticised the Centre’s foreign policy approach, alleging that India failed to benefit from cheaper Russian gas supplies due to pressure from the United States, thereby worsening the domestic fuel situation.

The remarks come amid escalating political sparring over inflation, fuel prices and the country’s broader economic condition following the recent hike in petrol and diesel prices across India.
