Trump posts ‘Calm Before the Storm’ message amid rising US–Iran tensions

Washington, May 17: Donald Trump has sparked fresh geopolitical speculation after sharing an AI-generated image along with a cryptic message reading, “It was the calm before the storm,” amid growing tensions in the Middle East and reports of possible renewed military planning against Iran.

The post, shared on his social media account, features Trump wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap alongside a US Navy admiral aboard a warship navigating rough seas. The image also shows Iranian vessels in the background, amplifying its confrontational symbolism and leading to widespread interpretation as a warning directed at Tehran.

The message comes as reports suggest Trump is holding discussions with senior aides on potential next steps in US policy toward Iran, including contingency planning for possible airstrikes should diplomatic negotiations fail.

According to media reports, including The New York Times, Trump is expected to take a major decision on Iran strategy, with internal discussions focusing on military and diplomatic options.

In recent comments, Trump warned that Iran could face a “very bad time” if a new agreement is not reached soon. In an interview with French broadcaster BFMTV, he said Iran “has an interest in reaching an agreement,” signaling continued pressure on Tehran to return to negotiations.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran has received signals suggesting Washington may be open to renewed talks, but emphasized that deep mistrust of US intentions remains a major barrier to progress.

Tensions remain high despite a previously announced ceasefire, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route that handles a significant portion of the world’s energy trade.

The United States continues to maintain a strong naval presence in the Gulf region, even as the USS Gerald R. Ford recently completed an extended deployment.

On the Iranian side, senior officials have reiterated a hardline stance. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf reportedly warned that alternative proposals to Tehran’s peace framework would be ineffective, while Iranian lawmakers have also discussed proposals to regulate maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz, including restrictions on certain commercial routes.

The developments underscore rising uncertainty in US–Iran relations, with diplomatic engagement and military signaling unfolding simultaneously against a backdrop of fragile regional stability.
