Kohima, May 17: The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial was observed in Kohima on Sunday at the College of Nursing, with communities joining the global initiative to remember lives lost to HIV and AIDS.

Speaking at the programme, District AIDS Control Officer (DISHA) Dr Chibenthung Kithan said the memorial remains one of the world’s oldest and most significant community-led movements in response to HIV and AIDS.

Referring to this year’s theme, “Light the Legacy: Remember. Advance. Act.”, Dr Kithan said the observance symbolises remembrance, hope, resilience and responsibility.

He stated that the event honours individuals who lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses while renewing commitment towards supporting people living with HIV and strengthening efforts to end the epidemic.

Dr Kithan said the memorial also represents solidarity, compassion and hope, while acknowledging the contributions made by activists, healthcare workers, caregivers and community leaders in shaping the global response to HIV/AIDS.

He stressed the importance of collective efforts involving governments, communities, educational institutions, families and civil society organisations to eliminate stigma and ensure accessible healthcare and support services for all.

Highlighting the role of youth, he urged young people to actively spread awareness, promote empathy, encourage safe practices and foster social inclusion.
