Kalyan, May 18: In a significant enforcement action, the Kalyan Crime Unit of Thane Police has uncovered an alleged racket involving the relabelling and illegal sale of expired vitamin and nutritional supplements in the market.

Police arrested two individuals and seized goods valued at approximately Rs 26.63 lakh during the operation, officials confirmed.

According to investigators, the case came to light after Assistant Police Inspector Sarjerao Patil of Crime Branch Unit-3 received information that health supplements manufactured by Mosaic Wellness Pvt Ltd were being sold after tampering with their expiry dates.

Acting on the tip-off, a raid was conducted on May 14 at a shop in Zubeda Plaza in Kalyan West’s old fish market area. During the operation, the shop owner, identified as Abdulkarim Rais Khan, was detained, and a large quantity of expired nutritional and vitamin products was recovered.

During questioning, police traced the supply chain to a warehouse in Bhiwandi, where another accused, Birbal Ramdulahaar Yadav, was allegedly storing similar products. A subsequent raid led to the seizure of additional stock.

Investigators said the accused were allegedly removing original expiry labels from expired goods and replacing them with forged labels showing extended validity, before circulating them back into the market for sale.

The seized items reportedly included a wide range of consumer wellness products such as millet-based cereals, pasta, nutritional mixes in various flavours, ashwagandha gummies, vitamin supplements, skincare serums, peanut butter, and other health-related food products.
Police said the accused were fully aware that the repackaged products could pose serious health risks to consumers but continued to distribute them for profit.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and further investigation is being conducted by API Sarjerao Patil.
