Sydney, May 22: Mental disorders have become the leading cause of disability globally, overtaking cardiovascular diseases, cancer and musculoskeletal conditions, according to a new study published in The Lancet.

Researchers from The University of Queensland, Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research and University of Washington found that the global burden of mental disorders has more than doubled since 1990.

The study estimated that nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide were living with a mental disorder in 2023, almost twice the number recorded in 1990.

Researchers said the findings highlight the growing public health challenge posed by mental illnesses and underline the urgent need for stronger investment in mental healthcare systems, early intervention and long-term support services across countries.

The study also pointed to the rising impact of mental health conditions on quality of life, productivity and healthcare systems globally.
