New Delhi, May 28: The Centre is likely to proceed with action against Justice Yashwant Varma despite his resignation, with sources indicating that the government is determined to take the matter to its logical conclusion in order to reinforce judicial accountability and institutional transparency.
Sources said the resignation submitted by Justice Varma has not yet received formal approval from the President.

The controversy surrounding Justice Varma intensified after allegations against him led to demands for action from various quarters. Subsequently, a special inquiry committee was constituted to examine the charges levelled against the judge.
The committee has already submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. While the findings of the report have not been made public, sources said the allegations have been viewed seriously by the authorities.
According to government sources, the Centre may move an impeachment motion against Justice Varma during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
As per constitutional provisions, a judge of the Supreme Court or High Court can only be removed through a parliamentary process requiring a special majority in both Houses.
If the process is initiated, it would become one of the rare cases in India where impeachment proceedings against a sitting judge are formally pursued.
Sources said the government believes continuing with the proceedings despite the resignation would send a strong message regarding accountability within the higher judiciary.
The issue is expected to trigger intense political debate during the Monsoon Session, with both the ruling alliance and opposition parties likely to closely monitor and discuss the developments.
The stand taken by political parties on the matter is expected to draw attention amid the broader national debate on judicial accountability, transparency in appointments and mechanisms for addressing allegations against members of the judiciary.
