Udupi, Jun 3: MLA Yashpal Suvarna on Wednesday inspected the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Government Mother & Child Hospital in Udupi and reviewed the hospital's infrastructure, facilities, and maintenance requirements.

During the inspection, the MLA interacted with doctors, staff members, and hospital authorities to understand the challenges faced by the institution. He examined various sections of the hospital, including the chilling machines, lifts, and interior facilities.

Addressing the media, Yashpal Suvarna said, "The hospital was established in 2012 with noble intentions and was later handed over to the government in 2022. I am concerned about the numerous issues affecting the functioning of this six-storey healthcare facility, which was built using advanced technology. The district Mother & Child Hospital has excellent infrastructure, but several problems have come to light during today's inspection. Funds allocated for district hospitals should also be effectively utilized for this hospital. The government must take immediate steps to preserve and strengthen this institution," he said.

He further said, "Patients who come here seeking treatment should feel confident and comfortable. Everything, from electrical systems to the availability of medical staff, must function efficiently. I urge the government to send officials for a detailed inspection and take immediate corrective measures."

The MLA noted that maintenance of the hospital has been inadequate and that substantial financial assistance would be required for renovation and repairs. He pointed out that the building was designed with a central air-conditioning system, making the installation of conventional fans and other modifications difficult.

He further highlighted shortages in essential services and manpower, stating that doctors had informed him about the lack of sanctioned posts for staff and certain medical facilities, including scanning services.

Speaking on the occasion, district surgeon Dr Ashok H said that recruitment efforts were underway, although several positions were yet to receive government sanction. "Under my leadership, postgraduate students from Manipal and AJ Institutions have been engaged to support hospital services. We have also explored CSR funding opportunities to improve facilities. While salaries are being paid, the hospital requires modern technology and adequate maintenance funds to fully utilize its infrastructure," he said.

Yashpal Suvarna emphasized that minor allocations would not be sufficient to address the hospital's issues. "These problems will not be resolved with Rs 40–50 lac. At least Rs 5–10 crore will be required to transform this facility into a fully functional and well-maintained hospital."

The inspection was attended by district surgeon Dr Ashok H, Dr Sandeep, AMO, hospital officials, and staff members, who briefed the MLA on the institution's operational challenges and future requirements.
