Panaji, Jun 12: Passengers travelling between Margao and Karwar are set to benefit from significantly lower fares with the launch of the new Madgaon–Karwar Express, which was flagged off from Margao railway station on Thursday by Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna.
The newly introduced service is expected to reduce ticket costs by nearly 30 per cent compared to the special train that previously operated on the route. Railway officials said the shift to a regular express service would make travel more affordable while improving connectivity between Goa and coastal Karnataka.

In addition to serving passengers on the Margao–Karwar corridor, the train will enhance access to Bengaluru. The same 19-coach rake will continue its journey from Karwar as the Panchaganga Express, offering seamless connectivity to Karnataka's capital and other destinations.
Speaking at the launch event, Somanna said the railway sector continues to play a crucial role in the Centre's vision of a developed India. He highlighted several recent railway initiatives in Goa, noting that four new train services had been introduced and four existing services regularised between 2024 and 2026.
The minister also pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects in the state, including the sanctioning of three rail overbridges worth Rs 150 crore. He added that major redevelopment works are currently underway at Margao, Sanvordem and Vasco railway stations, with an investment of around Rs 50 crore earmarked for the modernisation of Vasco station alone.
Goa Public Works Department Minister Digambar Kamat described the new train as an important addition to the region's transport network. He said enhanced rail services would not only improve passenger convenience but also boost tourism, trade and employment opportunities in both Goa and neighbouring Karnataka.
Officials believe the new service will strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to economic growth by facilitating smoother movement of people and goods across the coastal belt.
