Tata Electronics confirms data breach, Apple and Tesla-linked files emerge online

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jun 23: Tata Electronics, a major Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturer and supplier to global technology companies including Apple and Tesla, has confirmed a cybersecurity incident after files allegedly stolen from the company surfaced on a hacker forum.

The forum listing claims that more than 630GB of data belonging to Tata Electronics, containing over 204,300 files, was leaked. A review of a sample of the files reportedly found documents that appeared to include Apple supplier specifications and Tesla manufacturing-related information. However, the authenticity, source and completeness of the leaked data could not be independently verified.

Founded in 2020, Tata Electronics has become a key company in India’s efforts to expand electronics manufacturing and semiconductor production. The company operates multiple facilities across India and employs more than 75,000 people, according to information shared by its parent company.

Tata Electronics has developed partnerships with several global technology firms, including Apple, ASML, Intel, Qualcomm and Tesla, as companies look to diversify supply chains beyond China and increase manufacturing operations in India.

Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia told TechCrunch that the leaked data advertised on the forum allegedly included Outlook email conversations, SAP-related information and documents linked to some Tata Electronics customers, including Apple and Tesla.

A Tata Electronics spokesperson confirmed the breach, stating that the company detected a cybersecurity incident on some of its systems “a few weeks ago” and immediately activated its response mechanisms.

The spokesperson said the incident had “no impact on our operations across businesses, which remain unaffected.”

However, the company did not disclose details about the type of data compromised, the number of affected individuals or organisations, whether customers were informed, or whether data belonging to clients such as Apple and Tesla was exposed.

According to reports, Tata Electronics informed some employees working at its iPhone assembly operations about the breach last week. Reports also stated that Apple was investigating the matter and that a ransom demand had been made to Tata Electronics.

The incident comes as Tata Group continues to expand its role in global technology supply chains. Tata Electronics entered iPhone manufacturing in 2023 after acquiring the India operations of Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron, a long-time Apple supplier.

The company later acquired a 60 per cent stake in the Indian unit of Pegatron, another major Apple manufacturing partner. Tata also signed a semiconductor supply agreement with Tesla in 2024, further strengthening its ties with global technology giants.

Apple and Tesla have not issued any comments on the reported breach.b
