Punjab launches ‘Soorma’ campaign, recovered addicts to lead anti-drug drive

Ludhiana, Jun 27: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday unveiled the ‘Soorma’ (Warrior) campaign, a new initiative aimed at strengthening the state's fight against drug addiction by empowering rehabilitated individuals to become role models and community leaders in the anti-drug movement.

Launching the campaign, the Chief Minister honoured people who have remained free from drug addiction for more than two years by presenting them with specially designed ‘Soorma’ rings and T-shirts. He said these individuals would serve as "Ambassadors of Hope" and encourage others battling addiction to seek rehabilitation and rebuild their lives.

Mann announced that the state government would also provide employment opportunities to rehabilitated individuals, enabling them to reintegrate into society while contributing to the campaign against substance abuse at the grassroots level.

Describing sports as one of the most effective tools to steer youth away from drugs, the Chief Minister said around 3,100 village sports grounds and 3,000 gyms across Punjab would become operational by July 15. The facilities, he said, are intended to provide young people with constructive avenues to channel their energy and talent.

He said the government's integrated approach—focusing on education, healthcare, sports infrastructure and rehabilitation—is laying the foundation for a healthier and drug-free Punjab.

Addressing the gathering, Mann praised the determination of the rehabilitated youth, saying they had overcome addiction despite the immense social stigma associated with substance abuse.

"Drug addiction often isolates people, as society tends to distance itself from those struggling with the problem. These young men and women have endured that hardship, fought their way back and are now ready to inspire others by sharing their journeys," he said.

The Chief Minister added that the government is expanding rehabilitation services across the state by establishing modern de-addiction and rehabilitation centres equipped with advanced facilities to support long-term recovery.

Highlighting the government's broader developmental agenda, Mann said Punjab has made remarkable progress in the education sector by improving the quality of government schools. He claimed the state's performance has placed it ahead of several others, including Kerala, in educational rankings.

Emphasising the importance of education in social transformation, the Chief Minister said quality education remains the most powerful means of eliminating poverty.

"Children studying in government schools today will become tomorrow's officers and professionals, helping their families rise above poverty. Sustainable progress comes through education, not temporary assistance," he said.
