Mumbai, Jul 8: Veteran actress Bhagyashree has responded to criticism over her promotion of a local lassi shop during her recent visit to Varanasi, saying that encouraging local food and vendors helps preserve regional culture and supports small businesses.

The controversy arose after a video of the Maine Pyar Kiya actress enjoying kulhad lassi in Kashi went viral, with some social media users alleging that she did not actually consume the drink after filming because of its sugar and fat content.

Addressing the criticism in a post on social media, Bhagyashree shared a video of herself drinking the lassi and explained that it served as a refreshing energy boost after attending the Mangala Aarti early in the morning and walking along the Ganga ghats in intense heat.

She said curd is rich in calcium, protein and probiotics, while sugar or jaggery provides energy and water helps with hydration, making the drink suitable for her after spending time outdoors in temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius.

Rejecting claims that the promotion was fake, the actress questioned the authenticity of edited clips circulating online and accused critics of drawing conclusions based on incomplete videos.

Bhagyashree also stressed that promoting local food does not earn her money but instead benefits local vendors and encourages people to appreciate regional culinary traditions.

"Local food ko promote karne se koi bhi paise nahi kamate. The only good is that local food, local vendors get support," she wrote, adding that it was unfortunate that even simple efforts to support local businesses were being criticised.

The actress concluded by describing Kashi as a place of purity and urged people to focus on positive initiatives rather than spreading negativity.

The viral video had triggered mixed reactions online, with some users questioning the promotion and others defending Bhagyashree, noting that celebrities may choose to maintain personal dietary preferences while still endorsing local cuisine and businesses.
