Mysuru, July 11: Legendary playback singer S Janaki, whose enchanting voice captivated millions of music lovers for over six decades, passed away at Apollo Hospital in Mysuru on Saturday following age-related ailments. She was 88. Her demise marks the end of an era in Indian film music.
Fondly known as the 'Nightingale of South India', Janaki carved an unparalleled niche in Indian cinema with her mellifluous voice and remarkable versatility. From rustic folk melodies to romantic duets, devotional hymns and classical compositions, she excelled across every genre, becoming one of the most revered playback singers in the country.

Born on April 23, 1938, Janaki remained a household name for more than six decades. During her illustrious career, she lent her voice to over 48,000 immortal songs in 17 languages, creating a musical legacy that transcended linguistic and regional boundaries.
Janaki received four National Film Awards and 33 State Film Awards from various state governments in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to Indian cinema. Widely admired for her versatility, she shared a close professional bond with legendary playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam and iconic music composer Ilaiyaraaja.
During the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, she also enjoyed a memorable association with P B Srinivas, S P Balasubrahmanyam and Kannada cinema legend Dr Rajkumar. Her voice featured in almost every Dr Rajkumar film, making her one of the defining playback voices of Kannada cinema.
In recent years, Janaki had suffered injuries after slipping and falling. Following the accident, she had been using a wheelchair while battling age-related health issues.
With her passing, Indian cinema has lost one of its most iconic and beloved voices. Yet, the melodies she immortalised over an extraordinary career will continue to echo through generations, ensuring that the "Nightingale of South India" lives on forever in the hearts of music lovers.
