Mangaluru, Jul 17: A fishing boat capsized after being hit by heavy waves near the NITK beach in Surathkal, outside the city, on Friday, July 17. Prompt action by local fishermen averted a major tragedy, ensuring the safe rescue of all fishermen on board.

According to available sources, the country boat (Naadadoani), originally operating from the Malpe port in Udupi, encountered turbulent sea conditions off the Surathkal coast. The high-tide waves hit the vessel, causing it to capsize and throwing the fishermen into the sea.

Initial reports from the spot varied regarding the exact headcount and origin, indicating between six to seven out-of-state fishermen on board, suspected to be from Tamil Nadu or Andhra Pradesh.

Local fishermen from the Surathkal region noticed the overturned boat and rushed to the rescue in their own boats. They successfully pulled all the distressed fishermen out of the water and brought them safely to the shore.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. Coast Guard personnel rushed to the spot upon receiving the information to assess the situation. The incident created moments of anxiety among the coastal community.
