Breaking traditional barriers
Born in Kolhapur on June 11, 1969, Nair's early life was shaped by conventional expectations. When she expressed a desire for higher education, her father agreed on the condition that she tie the knot by the age of 23. True to her word, she met Kumar Nair and agreed to marry him after a brief 30-minute conversation. However, marriage was merely a milestone, not a limitation, to her soaring aspirations. Despite the rarity of women in technical fields during the early 1990s, she pursued electronics and telecommunications engineering at Walchand College in Sangli. Realising her true passion was in organisational culture, she joined XLRI Jamshedpur, graduating with a gold medal in 1992.
Starting as a management trainee at Hindustan Unilever, she quickly made history as the first woman to work the night shift on a factory floor, immersing herself in operations historically reserved for men. Over the next two decades, she steadily climbed the ranks. By 2016, she was appointed as the chief human resources officer at Unilever, becoming the youngest, first female, and first Asian to hold the position, overseeing a workforce of 160,000 across 190 countries.
