Mangaluru, Jul 25: A man sustained serious injuries after he was allegedly attacked with a machete by an unidentified assailant near Lalbagh Signal in Mangaluru on Friday afternoon.

The victim has been preliminarily identified as Vicky Bappal. According to initial information, he was riding his scooter at around 1:45 pm when the incident occurred.

As per eyewitnesses, an unidentified lone biker followed the victim and attacked him with a machete while both were on the move.

The injured man was immediately shifted to a hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Police said he suffered a deep injury near the neck.

Police officers have alerted checkposts across the city and launched a search to trace the accused.

A case will be registered at Barke police station, and the investigation will be led by the police inspector of Mangaluru East Sub-Division. Initial investigations are underway to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

Police sources said the victim is a rowdy sheeter and is under surveillance for alleged drug peddling. The victim currently has 11 cases registered against him, including assault and NDPS cases. In addition to these 11 pending cases, he has been acquitted in six other cases.
