Archana Puran Singh hopes new roles will eclipse her iconic Miss Braganza image

Mumbai, Jul 25: Veteran Bollywood actress Archana Puran Singh says that while her portrayal of the unforgettable Miss Braganza in the 1998 hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai remains one of the defining performances of her career, she now hopes audiences will recognise her for newer and more diverse roles.

In an exclusive conversation with reporters, Archana reflected on the lasting popularity of the character, describing it as both a source of pride and a reminder of the challenge every actor faces in constantly reinventing themselves.

She said Miss Braganza has been one of her greatest achievements, but acknowledged that the character's enduring appeal also highlights how difficult it has been to create another role with a similar cultural impact over the past two decades. According to the actress, while the performance continues to be celebrated, she believes an artist should always strive to move forward rather than be defined by a single role.

Looking at it from a positive perspective, Archana credited filmmaker Karan Johar and Dharma Productions for creating such a memorable character and said she was fortunate to have played a role that has remained etched in the minds of audiences for more than 25 years. However, she stressed that every actor hopes to evolve and surprise viewers with fresh performances.

Speaking about her latest OTT series, Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, Archana said the project gave her an opportunity to step away completely from the image associated with Miss Braganza. She expressed hope that the new role would leave its own lasting impression and allow audiences to see a different side of her as a performer.

She also pointed out that the success of a character is never solely the result of an individual actor's talent but depends on the combined efforts of the writers, directors, co-stars and the entire creative team. While Miss Braganza became iconic because of the film's overall success, she now hopes viewers will embrace her latest work with the same enthusiasm.

Describing Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya as one of the most rewarding experiences of her acting career, Archana said the project reaffirmed her belief that meaningful and challenging roles continue to come her way even after decades in the industry. She called the experience a significant milestone in her artistic journey and said it felt like the culmination of years of dedication to her craft.

The actress also expressed gratitude to the creators of the series for placing their trust in her. She said she felt honoured when writer Biswapati Sarkar envisioned her for the role, adding that being chosen for such a distinctive character by contemporary storytellers was deeply satisfying.

For Archana, she said, the greatest validation is not simply being remembered for a beloved role from the past, but continuing to inspire confidence among filmmakers who believe she can bring fresh and compelling characters to life.

The actress is currently receiving positive responses for Adarsh Baal Vidyalaya, which premiered on an OTT platform on July 24, with viewers and critics appreciating her performance in a role that marks a departure from her long-associated on-screen persona.
