Karkala, Jul 31: 'Alchi', a female Belgian Malinois dog of the state Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) dog squad, was given a respectful retirement on July 20 after completing eight years of exemplary service. With her extraordinary sense of smell, loyalty, and dedication, she strengthened the security forces in hundreds of operations.
A simple yet emotional farewell ceremony was held at the ANF headquarters in Karkala, where police inspector Santosh, officers, staff, and dog handlers paid tribute to Alchi's remarkable service.
Born on August 11, 2018, Alchi joined the ANF on November 10, 2018, at just three months old. She underwent rigorous 13-month training at the CRPF Dog Breeding and Training Centre in Bengaluru, gaining expertise in explosive detection and assault operations. She received specialized training in IED detection, bomb searches, patrolling, and forest operations before being deployed to the Karkala unit.
Alchi spent the majority of her service life in the dense forests of the Western Ghats. She was at the forefront of combing, search operations, and security duties in Naxal-affected and sensitive areas, including Agumbe, Hebri, Jayapura, Sringeri, Kollur, Subrahmanya, and Madikeri.
She consistently displayed outstanding performance in detecting explosives and IEDs, inspecting hazardous areas, executing forest assault operations, and tracking Naxal movements. She also efficiently handled VIP security, bomb detection, and security check responsibilities during the visits of the chief minister and other dignitaries to Karkala and surrounding forest regions. Her handlers, Pradeep B D and Dhananjay, managed her with utmost care, dedication, and professionalism.
Following Alchi's retirement, three other dogs—Amari, Agera, and Anji—continue to serve in the ANF dog squad.
"Dogs are not just a part of the police force; they are brave fellow warriors of the department. The loyalty, courage, and dedication to duty displayed by 'Alchi' during her service will always be an inspiration to us all. The ANF will always remember her service with gratitude," said ANF superintendent of police Hariram Shankar.
