Mangaluru, July 31: In view of continuous rainfall across Dakshina Kannada district and the forecast of similar adverse weather conditions, the district administration has declared a rain holiday for educational institutions on Saturday, August 1, as a precautionary measure.
The decision was taken based on the weather forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), Bengaluru, which indicated the possibility of continued heavy rainfall across the district.
The holiday will be applicable to the following institutions:
- All anganwadis
- All government, aided and private schools, including residential schools
- All pre-university colleges up to Class 12, including residential colleges
- All ITI and diploma colleges, including residential institutions
The district administration has warned that legal action will be initiated against institutions violating the holiday order under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
As part of the precautionary measures, drivers and guardians have been advised to ensure that children do not enter water-filled low-lying areas, lakes, riversides or beaches.
Fishermen have been instructed not to venture into the sea in view of the prevailing weather conditions.
District-level and taluk-level officials have been directed to remain at their respective headquarters, ensure effective disaster management measures and respond immediately to public complaints. They have also been instructed to maintain continuous communication with the control room at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
Tourists and members of the public have been advised not to visit riverbanks and beaches as a precautionary measure.
Officials of the concerned departments have also been directed to open care centres in every taluk and keep them in a state of readiness to handle any emergency situation.
