Panaji, Aug 15: At a time when Goa is witnessing intense public debate and protests over environmental degradation and large-scale development projects, Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju has called upon citizens to join hands in protecting the state's environment for future generations.
In his Independence Day message, the Governor stressed that environmental protection must remain a collective responsibility and asserted that economic development and ecological conservation should go hand in hand.
"Environmental protection is another area that demands our collective attention. Goa's forests, rivers, beaches, wetlands and biodiversity constitute our precious natural heritage. Development and environmental sustainability must go hand in hand," he said.
Appealing to citizens to adopt responsible and sustainable practices, the Governor urged people to work together to safeguard Goa's natural resources for posterity.
His message comes amid heightened concerns over environmental issues in the state, with civil society groups and local communities raising objections to projects they claim pose a threat to Goa's fragile ecosystems.
The Governor also underlined the need for inclusive development, saying the benefits of progress must reach every section of society. He said the welfare and empowerment of women, children, senior citizens and economically and socially disadvantaged sections should remain among the government's foremost priorities.
"A truly developed society is one in which progress is accompanied by dignity, equality, social justice and equal opportunities for all," he said.
Calling for greater public participation in nation-building, Raju said building a prosperous, peaceful, sustainable and inclusive Goa required the involvement of every citizen.
"Nation-building is not the responsibility of the Government alone. Every citizen has an important role to play. Our small acts of responsibility, honesty, discipline and service, when multiplied across society, can bring about transformative change," he said.
Addressing the youth, the Governor described them as the nation's greatest strength and urged them to pursue excellence through knowledge, innovation and technology while remaining rooted in India's cultural and ethical values.
He also highlighted Goa's tradition of communal harmony, saying the state's harmonious blend of cultures, languages and communities reflected India's unity in diversity and must be preserved.
Marking the 80th year of India's Independence, the Governor urged citizens to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters by renewing their commitment to uphold the nation's sovereignty, unity and integrity, protect the environment, respect the rule of law and contribute towards building a stronger, self-reliant and compassionate India.
