Kalmady, Aug 15: The annual feast of Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine at Stella Maris Church, Kalmady, was celebrated with grandeur and deep devotion on Saturday, August 15.

Dr Lesily Cilford D’Souza presided over the solemn festival Eucharistic celebration. Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop emeritus of the diocese of Udupi, was the concelebrant. Fr Denis D’Souza, dean of Udupi deanery, Fr Baptist Menezes, director of Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine, and priests from the deanery were present.

In his homily, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo reflected on god’s creation of humanity and the role of Mother Mary in salvation history. He highlighted how Mary was chosen by god and became the mother of Jesus Christ, through whom the saviour came into the world.

He said that Mother Mary played an important role in bringing the apostles together and strengthening them after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

The Church celebrates the assumption of Mother Mary on August 15, commemorating her being taken into heavenly glory. “Let us do what he says” was the theme of the celebration. The bishop urged parents to guide and correct their children with love rather than merely scolding them.

Referring to the incident when Jesus was found in the church, he highlighted Mother Mary’s concern and guidance, while encouraging children to be obedient and respectful like Jesus.

Fr Baptist Menezes, rector of Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine, expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the successful organisation of the feast. He acknowledged the dedicated service rendered by priests, choir teams and volunteers during the nine-day novena leading up to the feast. He also thanked Naveen Fernandes - vice president of the Parish Pastoral Council, Presilla Alva - secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council, Denis Lasrado - 20 commissions and all voltener service given by the parishioners.

On the occasion, donors and sponsors were honoured by the bishop with blessed candles as a token of appreciation for their support. Thousands of devotees and parishioners participated in the celebrations, seeking the blessings of Our Lady of Vailankanni. The shrine remained vibrant throughout the day, with devotees offering prayers, lighting candles and attending the Eucharistic celebrations.

A fellowship meal was served to all those present, bringing the celebrations to a close in a spirit of faith and community.
