Beltangady: Grandson held for robbing Rs 5-lac gold bangles from his 82-year-old grandmother

Beltangady, Aug 17: Punjalakatte police have arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly robbing his 82-year-old grandmother of two gold bangles worth around Rs 5 lac at Uddada Gudde in Tenka Kajekaru, Bantwal, and recovered the jewellery from his possession.

According to the complaint filed by Sadiq, his mother Avvamma, 82, was alone at home on August 14 when an unidentified man entered the house with his face covered with a cloth to conceal his identity.

The man allegedly forcibly pulled off two gold bangles from her hands and fled. The bangles, weighing around 40 grams and valued at approximately Rs 5 lac, were allegedly snatched from her, causing bleeding injuries to her hands.

Based on Sadiq's complaint, Punjalakatte police registered a case under Crime No. 70/2026 under Section 309(6) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.

As the investigation progressed, police arrested the accused, identified as Shabbir, 33, a resident of Tenka Kajekaru, Bantwal, on August 16. Police said Shabbir is incidentally the grandson of the victim, Avvamma. The two gold bangles were recovered from his possession.

Police said the accused will be questioned further and produced before the competent court.

The operation was carried out under the leadership of Belthangady deputy superintendent of police Rohini C K. Belthangady rural circle inspector Ravi B S, Punjalakatte police station PSI Rajesh K V and police personnel including ASI Bennichchan, Praveen Murugoli, Rajesh, Vijay Kumar, Rahul Rao, Nagaraj, Rajith, Basavaraj and Satish participated in the operation.

District technical wing personnel Divakar and Sampath also assisted in the investigation.
