Mangaluru, Aug, 18: Baptist Sports Foundation successfully organized the Independence Cup 2026 – Dakshina Kannada & Udupi inter-district badminton tournament in memory of Dr Kishore Kumar C K. The two-day tournament was held on August 15 and 16, in Mangaluru, witnessing the participation of more than 200 players from various parts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
The inaugural ceremony was held on August 16 with Pradeep D’Souza, deputy director, department of youth empowerment and sports, as the chief guest. The ceremony was inaugurated by Adv Aruna Kishore by lighting the ceremonial lamp.










The event was graced by Ivan Pinto, sports promoter; Santhosh, president of Dakshina Kannada Badminton Association; Ravindra Bhandary, president of Mangaluru Badminton Association; Sudheesh P K, international badminton player; Dr Ramesh H N, Mangalore University; and Nishkala Poojary, sports nutritionist.
The programme was compered by Jennifer Barretto, while Arun Baptist delivered the welcome address.
As a mark of respect and remembrance, dignitaries, organizers, and players paid floral tribute to Dr Kishore Kumar C K, in whose memory the tournament was organized.
Following the inauguration, Nishkala Poojary, sports nutritionist, conducted a special educational and awareness session on “Importance of Nutrition for Badminton Players.” The session highlighted the role of balanced nutrition in improving physical fitness, athletic performance, recovery, and overall health among badminton players.
The two-day tournament witnessed enthusiastic participation from players across both districts. The matches were conducted in a highly competitive yet sporting atmosphere, with players displaying excellent sportsmanship, discipline, and enthusiasm throughout the event.
The tournament was successfully conducted with the collective efforts and cooperation of the Baptist Sports Foundation team, organizers, officials, technical staff, volunteers, parents, coaches, and players. Their support ensured that the tournament was conducted smoothly, efficiently, and on schedule.
The Independence Cup 2026 provided a valuable competitive platform for young badminton players from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, while also contributing towards the promotion of badminton, development of sporting talent, and creation of greater awareness and opportunities for young athletes.
The successful completion of the tournament stands as a meaningful tribute to Dr Kishore Kumar C K and reflects the commitment of Baptist Sports Foundation towards strengthening grassroots sports and providing quality sporting opportunities to young athletes.
