Mumbai, Sep 1: Social activist Anna Hazare has been admitted to the ICU at Bombay Hospital in Mumbai after his health deteriorated on Monday afternoon.

The 89-year-old veteran activist was brought to Mumbai from Ralegan Siddhi in Maharashtra, where he had been undergoing treatment at a local hospital. He was shifted to Bombay Hospital in a cardiac ambulance after his condition suddenly worsened.

Hazare developed a viral infection along with severe dehydration and kidney-related complications. He has been admitted under the supervision of Dr Gautam Bhansal, while doctors have begun conducting medical tests, including kidney function tests, to assess his condition.

Further details about his health are awaited.

Last week, Hazare was admitted to Vedant Hospital in Shirur after experiencing urinary problems. His condition improved after around three days of treatment. However, his creatinine levels rose during the treatment, following which doctors decided to shift him to Mumbai for further care, according to report.

Hazare rose to national prominence during the 2011 anti-corruption movement, when he led a hunger strike demanding the enactment of a strong Lokpal law. Over the years, he has remained active in social reform and public welfare issues.

More recently, Hazare extended support to protests over the alleged NEET paper leak and urged the government to address students' concerns through dialogue and peaceful means. He also criticised the use of force against protesters and called for public welfare to remain the priority.
