Nalasopara, Oct 31: Eight people were seriously injured after a lift in a seven-storey residential building, Dhananjay Avenue, at Patankar Park in Nalasopara (West), came crashing down around noon on Saturday.

The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital by fellow residents. Nalasopara police visited the spot and inspected the site after receiving information about the incident.

According to residents, the eight occupants were travelling in the lift from the fifth floor to the ground floor around 12 pm when it suddenly plunged down at high speed.

Hearing a loud impact, other residents rushed to the spot and managed to break open the lift door after considerable effort. They rescued the occupants and shifted them to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

The injured include advocate Satish Bhondve, a resident of the building, and seven of his guests.

"The occupants fell on top of one another inside the lift. Several of them have suffered serious leg injuries," said eyewitness Iqbal Mankiya.

The building was constructed by developers Dhananjay Raut and Rajiv Kotla of Sai Kiran Company after redeveloping an old structure.

The three-year-old building's housing society was formed around two-and-a-half years ago.

"We had installed a spring mechanism in the lift as a safety measure," said housing society chairman Samir Dhonde.
