Bantwal, Sep 3: A retired headmaster has drawn attention by cleaning the drain in front of his house at his own expense, carrying out work that would normally be undertaken by the municipality.

The Bantwal Municipality is currently under the administration of an administrator as there are no elected members. Despite the onset of the monsoon nearly two months ago, no action had been taken to address the issue. As a result, retired headmaster B Ramachandra Rao personally bore the expenses and got the work carried out.

In view of the monsoon, a large quantity of soil had accumulated in the roadside drain along the road that turns from the railway station towards the Kaikunj East locality in the Kaikunj 14th Ward area under Bantwal Municipality. As the accumulated soil blocked the flow of rainwater, muddy water began entering the local road.

Rao had submitted written representations to the municipality several times along with local residents regarding the problem. However, as there was no response, he eventually decided to act in the public interest.

He bore the expenses himself and successfully got the drain desilted using a JCB and labourers, drawing appreciation for his initiative.
