Goa, Sep 5: A 37-year-old man was killed and another person injured after a Mercedes car allegedly rammed into a two-wheeler in Sancoale, South Goa, on Friday afternoon. Police said the Mercedes driver, who was allegedly drunk, has been arrested.

The incident occurred around 2 pm when the luxury car allegedly collided with the two-wheeler carrying Ashok Chavan and pillion rider Sonu Kumar. Chavan suffered critical injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

Police said the Mercedes dragged the two-wheeler and Chavan for nearly 2 km following the collision before the car caught fire and came to a halt near a church.

An eyewitness, Jose Fernandes, told the media that the car suddenly caught fire after coming to a halt. He said he and another person pulled the driver out of the burning vehicle to prevent him from suffering fatal injuries.

The pillion rider, Sonu Kumar, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Police arrested the Mercedes driver, identified as Vidhyadhar Prabhu, on Friday night. He was produced before a local court and remanded to police custody for two days.

Police have charged Prabhu with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. An FIR has also been registered for rash driving, culpable homicide and an act endangering the life or personal safety of others under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

Further investigation into the incident is underway.
