Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 8: Kerala is facing a double challenge of soaring temperatures and a worsening power shortage, with temperatures expected to remain 3 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal for another day and electricity restrictions likely to continue in several areas.
The state recorded a maximum temperature of 36.2 degrees Celsius on Monday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that hot conditions will continue on Tuesday.
Some relief is expected from Wednesday, with rain likely in parts of the state.
The rise in temperatures has led to a sharp increase in electricity consumption. The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) estimates that demand has surged by up to 800 MW.
With sufficient power unavailable from outside the state during peak hours, KSEB imposed power restrictions of up to an hour in several areas on Monday. Officials said the restrictions could continue on Tuesday if the demand pattern remains unchanged.
KSEB said the absence of short-term power contracts and high rates in the real-time electricity market were making additional power procurement difficult.
Although the board had floated tenders to procure electricity for September, no company came forward to supply power during peak hours. This has left KSEB with limited options to meet the sudden rise in demand.
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority has issued precautionary measures amid the intense heat, warning of the risk of sunstroke, heat exhaustion and dehydration.
People have been advised to avoid direct exposure to the sun, particularly during the hottest hours, drink plenty of water and remain alert to symptoms of heat-related illness.
The heat warning remains in force from September 7 to 9, with the Meteorological Department cautioning that temperatures could remain significantly above normal across Kerala.
With households and commercial establishments increasingly relying on air conditioners and other cooling appliances, the scorching weather has further increased electricity consumption, adding pressure to an already strained power supply system.
