Panaji, Sep 12: A major fire broke out near the flea market in Anjuna, destroying several huts and cottages meant for tourists and causing significant property damage in the early hours of Saturday.

The fire broke out at Monteiro Waddo, where the tourist cottages were shut at the time of the incident. No injuries or loss of life were reported.

Fire and Emergency Services personnel from the Mapusa fire station rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.

“We got a call around 2.30am saying that thatched huts at Anjuna were on fire. Three huts were destroyed and one we managed to save,” a firefighter said.

According to the owner, property worth around Rs 2 lakh was lost in the fire, while assets valued at approximately Rs 5 lakh were saved.

“The huts were closed and we have not yet identified the cause of the fire,” the firefighter said.

Firefighters faced difficulties in reaching the huts due to the narrow access road. The department deployed three fire tenders to tackle the blaze.
