Mangaluru, Sep 12: One can leave Mangaluru, but Mangaluru never really leaves one.
That feeling of home, identity and nostalgia is at the heart of ‘Namma Ooru Mangaluru’, the new release by Mangaluru-based artist Sanjith Shetty, better known as Homie Sanj.
Blending English, Kannada, Tulu and Konkani, the song is a high-energy celebration of Mangaluru and its people, capturing the city’s culture, humour, food, languages, coastline, memories and unmistakable local spirit.
But this is not a conventional hometown tribute.
‘Namma Ooru Mangaluru’ is a love letter disguised as a banger, built with the energy of a contemporary anthem while carrying the emotion of home.
For Mangalureans living across the Gulf, Europe, North America, Australia and other parts of the world, the song is designed to trigger something instantly familiar: memories of the monsoon, family, local food, familiar roads, conversations in Tulu or Konkani, and the feeling of returning home.
“Mangaluru has its own personality. The way we speak, eat, celebrate, joke and live is very unique. I wanted to capture that feeling in a song that sounds modern, energetic and something every Mangalorean can proudly call their own,” says Sanjith.
The track combines nostalgia with a strong hook, upbeat production and celebratory energy, giving it the feel of a song made for car speakers, parties, college events, reels and gatherings wherever Mangalorean’s come together.
For Homie Sanj, the release also marks the beginning of a larger musical journey focused on original music, coastal stories and multilingual culture presented with a contemporary sound and cinematic visual style.
At its core, however, ‘Namma Ooru Mangaluru’ has a simple message.
Whether one is listening from Mangaluru, Dubai, London, Toronto, Melbourne or anywhere else in the world, sometimes all it takes is one sound to remind one where belongs to.
For Mangalureans everywhere, ‘Namma Ooru Mangaluru’ hopes to be that sound.
