Bengaluru, Sep 20: Mangaluru has secured the 665th position globally in the 2026 Oxford Economics Global Cities Index, featuring among six Karnataka cities listed in the prestigious ranking of the world’s 1,000 major cities.
Mangaluru has been placed in the ‘Coastal Hub Driving Growth’ category. The other Karnataka cities featured in the index are Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad and Kalaburagi.
The cities have been assessed on five key global parameters — economics, human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance.
Oxford Economics is one of the world’s leading independent economic advisory organisations and conducts studies covering more than 200 countries, 100 industry sectors and 8,000 cities and regions. The organisation provides data and solutions to help decision-makers respond quickly and effectively to complex and uncertain global conditions.
The Oxford Global Cities Index is prepared by Oxford Economics’ Cities and Regions team. The team comprises more than 40 economists with specialised expertise in urban data, city growth and future economic forecasts.
In the 2026 Oxford Global Cities Index, 100 Indian cities feature among the 1,000 cities ranked globally, reflecting the growing importance of Indian urban centres in the global city system.
Among Indian cities, Bengaluru ranks 311th globally, followed by Mumbai at 330th, Chennai at 381st and Hyderabad at 421st.
The 2026 index ranks the world’s 1,000 leading cities across various categories. Among Karnataka cities, Kalaburagi ranks 781st globally under the ‘Rich Heritage, Growing Future’ category.
Bengaluru, described as ‘India’s Innovation Capital’, occupies the 311th position, while Mysuru, categorised as a ‘Heritage City with Global Appeal’, ranks 628th.
Belagavi ranks 683rd under the ‘City of Opportunities’ category, while Hubballi-Dharwad is placed 707th globally in the ‘Engineering, Industrial and Education Hub’ category.
The inclusion of six Karnataka cities in the global index reflects the state’s diverse urban strengths spanning economic activity, innovation, heritage, coastal development, industry and education.
