Bicholim, Sep 21: Authorities have demolished a dilapidated house near Shri Shantadurga High School at Bhailipeth in Bicholim, bringing relief to students, parents, pedestrians and motorists who had raised concerns over the structure’s safety.

The building had remained in a deteriorating condition for several years, with its crumbling walls and damaged roof posing a potential threat to people in the vicinity.

Parents waiting near the structure during school dispersal had expressed particular concern over the possibility of the building collapsing.

Social worker Raam Shirgaonkar and local resident Shriram Rawool had repeatedly urged the authorities over the past five years to take action against the unsafe structure.

Residents had also called for an inspection and demolition of the building, fearing that its weakened condition could lead to an accident and injuries.

The issue was raised publicly again in July, when Rawool highlighted the risks posed by the structure to students, parents and others using the area.

Residents have welcomed the demolition, saying it has removed a long-standing safety concern.

“This was a serious concern for the locality for several years. The demolition will provide much-needed relief to students, parents and commuters,” Shirgaonkar said.
