Nagoya, Sep 27: India completed a golden double in kabaddi at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, with both the men's and women's teams defeating Iran in their respective finals on Saturday.

The Indian men's team defeated Iran 40-34 to retain the Asian Games title, while the women's team edged past Iran 37-34 in a closely fought final.

India added seven medals across kabaddi, athletics, shooting and squash on the day, taking its overall tally to 30 medals — four gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze — and moving to 10th position in the medal standings.

In athletics, Tajinderpal Singh Toor won silver in the men's shot put with a throw of 20.64 metres. Sawan Barwal also secured silver in the men's marathon in 2 hours, 11 minutes and 37 seconds, ending India's 44-year wait for a podium finish in the event. His time was a personal best and a new national record.

In shooting, Tilottama Sen, Vidarsa K Vinod and Ashi Chouksey won silver in the women's 50-metre rifle three-position team event with a score of 1,763 points.

Prachi Chaudhary won bronze in the women's 400 metres with a time of 53.21 seconds, while Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar secured bronze in mixed doubles squash.

The men's kabaddi victory marked India's ninth gold medal in the men's event at the Asian Games, while the women's triumph extended India's title streak in the women's competition.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated the Indian men's kabaddi team on winning the gold medal. In a social media post, she noted that the victories of both the men's and women's teams had resulted in a golden double for India in kabaddi.

The President praised the players for their skill, composure, resilience and teamwork, which helped India secure the twin victories.

In a social media post, he said the country was proud of its kabaddi champions and praised their courage, composure and teamwork, while wishing the players success in their future endeavours.
