Kasargod, Sept 27: Badiadka police have arrested four persons in connection with the theft of electricity cables worth lakhs of rupees belonging to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) from Gunaje in Perla.

The arrested have been identified as Noushad (34), a resident of B C Road in Bantwal; Muhammad (41), a resident of Kidur; Sahid (29), a native of Karnataka; and Naveen (48).

Two other persons allegedly involved in the theft are absconding, and police have launched a search to trace them.

The theft took place in the early hours of September 24, when the gang allegedly stole around 1,000 metres of LTAB cables valued at approximately Rs 4 lac from near a transformer at Gunaje, under the Perla power section.

The masked gang arrived in a pickup van and allegedly loaded and transported the cables. Their movements were captured by CCTV cameras installed nearby. Local residents noticed the theft in the morning and alerted KSEB officials.

Following the incident, the assistant engineer of the Perla power section lodged a complaint at the Badiadka police station.

Police began their investigation by examining the CCTV footage. Their probe subsequently established that the accused had fled towards Karnataka after allegedly committing the theft.

Police have recovered the entire quantity of stolen cables from the arrested accused.

The four accused were produced before a court in Kasaragod and remanded in judicial custody, while efforts are continuing to trace the two others who remain at large.
